Oskar Jones is a London based saxophonist, composer and bandleader who is rapidly
developing his sound. In 2023, he graduated from The Reid School of Music with the Bucher-Fraser Scholarship and the Andrew Grant Bequest Prize for Portfolio of Compositions. There, during concurrent study of contemporary and classical piano and composition, a continued self-study of the saxophone kindled a desire to gain a deeper understanding of jazz, its history, andmusical language. Oskar then pursued a performance master’s on tenor saxophone at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama through to 2025, for which he was the recipient of the Help Musicians Postgraduate Award in 2024, where he studied under the guidance of leading UK jazz musicians. This formative two year period catalysed the shift of his dominant creative outlet to the
exploration of the instrument’s expressive potential within the anarchic structures of jazz, and it’s framework for individual and group expression through improvisation.

as “fresh, contemporary, jazz talent”, his compositions primarily take shape in quartet form. They focus on the intentionality of expression, honesty, and authenticity through pellucid, lyrical melodies and fierce grooves that straddle through-composition and improvisation, drawing inspiration from the deeply emotive melodies of John Coltrane and Tigran Hamasyan. Underpinned by strong emotive and visual associations, the band shapes dynamic forms and intense contrasts that seek to evoke, communicate, and translate abstract feelings into a shared experience.

In 2026, he consolidated the band line-up of James Leaver-Whitfield (bass), Luke Brueck Seeley (drums), and Joseph Game (piano), having met at Guildhall, whose chemistry is enabling the music to reach further. Oskar has also performed as a sideman and co-leader in various projects in Edinburgh and London, performing at the Dundee Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Hidden Door Festival, Kelburn Garden Party, The Southbank Centre, and on two UK tours. Additionally, he performed at the EFG London Jazz Festival’s collaboration with GSMD in 2025.

He also runs the genre-fluid trio "Waltzing", which presents itself through live-compositional forms, melding acoustic sound with an extensive use of effect pedals, drum machines, and samplers to concoct sound worlds that translate contemporary lived experience into music.

As a composer he has been commisioned work for BBC Radio 4, including for the documentary "The Lowball Tapes" in 2022, and was a receiver of the Andrew Grant Bequest Prize for Portfolio of Compositions from The Reid School of Music at The University of Edinburgh in 2023, where he graduated with a first-class with honours degree, as well being awarded the Bucher-Fraser Scholarship and Reid School of Music Recognition award.

Additionally, he frequently works in collaboration with artist Caroline Areskog Jones, producing scores and soundscapes for video works and installations that explore a range of sensitive, subtle narratives and spatial relationships. In 2020 'Sounding Line' was screened internationally at the Nature & Culture – International Poetry Film Festival Copenhagen, The World of Light Exhibition Auckland and the Montreal International Film Festival.
